This past Wednesday, I went on a tour of Yankee Stadium. It began at noon, and lasted an hour. You are taken by a decent, earnest kind of guy, who has told the same stale Yankee-themed jokes thousands of times, and yet still finds them mildly humorous.

We went to the monuments, which held no interest for me. However, while the others were reading sappy prose about Billy Martin, the center field gate was open–and I stepped onto the field. Believe me, it was almost religious. I looked out, but mostly I looked up–and could see my life flashing before my eyes. My first game, my son’s first game, all the games I went to with my friends, with my brothers, a few with my dad–over there, and there, and there. All the games with my assorted women, with assorted salesmen–the night in 1976 when Graig Nettles busted Bill Lee’s shoulder…and then back to the tour. Into the dugout and the clubhouse, which was nice. The press box? No interest–I left early, by myself. Tour over.

On the cover of this month’s Ebony magazine (a joke of a publication, one of many jokes) is a photo of Michelle Obama, with the caption “…the real Michelle Obama!”. Not only has the photo undergone a massive retouch, but she is wearing no less than 500 pounds of make-up. Yep, the real Michelle Obama…unless it really is the real Michelle Obama! Then the joke is on all of us.
